Tasting Notes

Cognizant is a new collaborative project between K&L and some of New Zealand's finest winemakers. "Cognizant" is defined as having an intimate grasp of knowledge through personal experience. This series of wines will pay homage to talented winemakers and their ability to capture the unique "sense of place" or "terroir" within their wines. The first wine being released under the Cognizant label was made by Jason and Anna Flowerday of TWR (Te Whare Ra) winery. The fruit comes from exceptional vineyards in both the Wairau and Awatere Valleys. 25% of the assemblage was fermented with portions of wild yeast in neutral 600-liter French oak puncheons. The final blend was brought together in September 2014 after being carefully crafted by Jason, Anna, and me. The wine captures the brightness, zestiness, and minerality of classic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, while deliberately avoiding overly "grassy" or "herbaceous" flavors. The barrel-fermented portion adds wonderful richness and texture to the winemaking. It's a good cut above competitors in the price point. Only 250 cases were made of this truly artisanal wine. I hope you enjoy it! Cheers! (Ryan Woodhouse, K&L New Zealand Wine Buyer)

This is a white wine could possibly satisfy every Sauvignon Blanc drinker, unless you only like it when it is fermented and aged in new oak. It is the perfect blend of Loire Valley SB and a traditional Marlborough SB. So, of coarse, it will be crisp and zingy. Where worlds start colliding is that it has a fairly intense mineral component, think France, with riper citrus fruits, a whiff of grass and more weight and texture than you would expect, think NZ. Buy a case and always keep some in the fridge, it goes with almost everything and nothing at all.

Man, what a delicious bargain Sauvignon Blanc...Orange and lemon peels, zippiness from the streamlined acidity, crispy and expressive apples and stone fruits, and a solid case of delicious minerality. Yep...that about sums up this great wine, enjoy!

Ever curious about the workhorse Ryan Woodhouse’s next hat trick from New Zealand, I have to admit that he really pulled a lovely bottle out of his cap with this one, with the talented help of a couple blessed with the best surname on Earth, Jason and Anna Flowerday. A true artisan’s touch at work here, with luscious, zesty fruit blended from two different vineyards in the Awatere and Wairau Valleys and given delicate barrel treatment to enhance the wonderful mouthfeel and generous richness of the wine. Once you taste this well-balanced and sophisticated creation, you will be fully 'cognizant' of why the name….

A fantastic first release for this new label (even if I do say so myself...I helped blend it!). What we were searching for here is a really great example of "quintessential" Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. We wanted to capture those bright, bold flavors that put New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc on the map but we wanted to do it with class and authenticity. This wine uses Awatere Valley fruit for its punchy, snappy, flavor profile of lime zest, ripe citrus, tomato leaf and fresh cut herbs. Then in combination with this we blend a portion of some richer, riper fruit from the warmer Wairau Valley. This adds some tropical tones to the fruit and fleshes out the palate. Finally the 20% barrel ferment gives great concentration and excellent texture to the wine. Feedback from our staff and customers has been excellent. The wine has really hit the mark as a crowd pleasing style but with enough complexity to appeal to the more serious NZ wine aficionado.
    Top Value!
