Possessing grip, tannin, delineation, firmness, and potential complexity, the 2003 Syrah Garys’ Vineyard Whole Cluster is a big, full-bodied offering that requires 3-4 years of bottle age. It should last an uncommonly long 12-15 years. (RP)
Full, bright ruby. Highly aromatic nose combines black raspberry, smoke and roasted herbs; here one really smells the stems. Then lively but less dense and sweet than the Gary 's. Brisk acidity and some strong herbal notes give this a leaner aspect, but there's very good energy here. Privileges cut and definition over richness and breadth. With the inclusion of the stems, this wine has a pH over 4, and yet it comes across as quite firm, even a tad hard on the finish. I'd like to see this again in a couple of years.
