Fifty percent of the crop made it into the final blend of 2012 Pichon Lalande, which includes more and more Cabernet Sauvignon under the new ownership of the Roederer Champagne firm. The 2012 is a blend of 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. It is a medium-bodied, pleasant, creamy, seductive effort...dark ruby color, attractive smoky, black currant and plum-like notes and light tannin.
A mix of dark plum, blackberry and fig fruit rumbles along here, with a charcoal note cutting a broad swath. Solid, if a bit blunt in the end, as bittersweet cocoa clamps own on the finish. Went for obvious extraction, and now we have to wait and see if this stretches out in time or stays landlocked by the square tannins.
A refined and long wine with beautiful fruit and refined tannins. Very pretty. Extremely well done. Second wine of Pichon Lalande.
