The 2013 Zinfandel Monte Rosso is fabulous. A dark, opulent wine, the 2013 is endowed with magnificent power and richness. Inky blue and black fruit, smoke, licorice and dark spices meld together in the glass. The firm mountain are nearly buried by the sheer intensity of the fruit. Grilled herbs, smoke and lavender add nuance on the close. This is a fabulous expression of Monte Rosso, one of the most historic and pedigreed vineyards in northern California. Drink through 2033. From the Gallo-owned vineyard of Monte Rosso, the 2013 Zinfandel Monte Rosso is spectacular. Coming from the red iron soils of old-vine Zinfandel plots (some of which date back to the 1890s), this blend of 95% Zinfandel and 5% Alicante Bouchet was aged in one-third new French oak. It exhibits a deep purple color, full body, and notes of briary, wild strawberry, cherry and raspberry fruit intermixed with notions of tar, earth, pepper and charcuterie. This complex, stunningly drinkable beauty should continue to offer decadent pleasure for 5-7 years. Morgan Twain Peterson continues to produce a fascinating array of wines from old vine sites throughout California. His 2012s demonstrated what a remarkable young talent he is, and the 2013s detailed below continue his Midas touch with a diversity of grapes as well as historical heritage sites. (RP)
