K&L Notes

The Wolftrap in 2013 is a blend of 66% Syrah, 32% Mourvedre, and 2% Viognier. From Neal Martin at erobertparker.com: "Robert Parker recently tasted Mark Kent's (a.k.a. Mr Boekenhoetskloof) Wolftrap red and white and came to the same conclusion as I in recent years: these are just wonderful bang for bucks wines that are thoughtfully crafted at this price point."

One of the best value reds in store. A spectacular sub-$10 bottle from this great estate in South Africa. This is made from grapes grown mostly in the Swartland on the west coast north of Capetown. Rhone varietals thrive here in the granite and iron rich soils. The wine has lots of concentrated dark fruits, toasty spices, cocoa nibs, smoked meat hints and stony minerals. The palate is med-full bodied, balanced and fine. Just ridiculous for this price.

Great spice, a soft richness, and generous fruit makes this Mataro blend an easy to enjoy blend. Perfect for entertaining and everyday wine.

This is my favorite bargain red! A traditional Rhone-style blend, this wine has a full-bodied, pleasant palate, with notes of redcurrant, black cherry, licorice and toasted walnut. The spice and kick of Syrah is nicely balanced here with the dark, weightier fruit of Mourvedre and the whole wine is softened with the addition of a small amount of Viognier. Once again, South Africa shows itself as one of the most under-valued wine regions out there.

This South African Cotes du Rhone wannabe is a screaming value and an excellent wine to boot. The Syrah component of the blend really shines through giving the wine weight, spice and a slightly meaty texture. The 32% Mourvedre adds brambly dark plums and minerality while the 2% voignier lifts the aromatics beautifully. Bargain hunters should not miss this.

This is a real wine for under $10- not just a bottle that is "good for the price". With sweet fruit in the mouth and a nice dose of South African smoke on the nose, this wine is bright enough on the finish to go with a variety of foods. Cheers to Boekenhoutskloof- their Wolftrap Red lets us all drink well for less!
