Really packed, with lush layers of blackberry ganache and currant confiture, this just pumps out velvety fruit backed by a racy minerality and a range of exotic spices in the background. Long, pure and deftly balanced through the finish. Drink now through 2027.

Looking at the traditional cuvee, the 2005 Châteauneuf du Pape is still ruby/opaque in color, with hints of purple at the center. A blend of 80% Grenache and 10% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre that was mostly destemmed and brought up in 80% foudre and 20% in barrels (one-third of which were new), it yields gorgeous notes of cassis, sweet blackberries, wild herbs, licorice and subtle garrigue on the nose. This is followed by a pure, elegant and full-bodied Châteauneuf du Pape that has fabulous fruit and texture, good freshness and a clean finish. I’d be thrilled to have a case in the cellar. (JD)

Dark purple. Highly complex aromas of smoky dark berries, kirsch and dried flowers, with a slow-building dark chocolate quality adding depth. Deep, chewy and sweet, offering lush blackberry and cassis flavors, velvety tannins and outstanding finishing thrust. This displays noteworthy power for a "basic" wine.
