The 1996 vintage of Cristal Rosé is absolutely brilliant and about as profound a glass of Brut Rosé as I can recall tasting. The ripe and classic style of the 1996 vintage, coupled with quite high acidity has combined to produce a magical Cristal Rosé, soaring from the glass in a celestial blend of white peach, rye toast, a touch of cranberry, chalky minerality, gentle smokiness and bread dough. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, crisp and racy, with brilliant mid-palate depth, stunning complexity, snappy acids, utterly refined and ethereal mousse and profound length and grip on the laser-like finish that is just beginning to reach its apogee of peak drinkability. This is a work of art of uncommon beauty. The 1996 Cristal Rosé is now drinking superbly well and will continue to dazzle for at least the next couple of decades. Sheer brilliance! (Drink between 2012-2035)
The 1996 Cristal Rose is an intensely-flavored Champagne with an unusually light pale salmon color. Its effervescence is restrained (almost non-existent), but the flavors are intense in this dry, austere, provocative offering. An outrageously great, singularly-styled rose Champagne, it is best served with intensely-flavored food. It is a tour de force in Champagne to enjoy over the next 7-10 years. Louis Roederer does not display a disgorgement date or consumer friendly lot number on its non-vintage Brut. This is regrettable as it has consistently been one of the finer bottlings in this category. (RP)
Even better, the 1996 Cristal Rosé blossoms on the palate with magnificent depth and pure volume. The sense of phenolics ripeness and vinous intensity are very much evident. Today, the 1996 Cristal Rosé is utterly captivating for its sensual, enveloping personality and total sense of class. (AG)
Original disgorgement in 2002. First of all, this is incredibly fresh. The color has deepened and turned a shade of bronze. The complexity is here, with honey, toast and grilled hazelnuts, together with deep cherries, sous-bois and dried red flowers. The palate is super fresh, the chardonnay holding the mineral line in support of the richness of the pinot noir. A fine-tuned double act.
Copper-tinged pale pink color, with a strong mousse. Powerful aromas of honey, wild strawberry, blood orange, brioche, cinnamon toast, candied ginger and subtle clove. Remarkably concentrated, dense rose with kaleidoscopic fruit flavors ranging from citrus to orchard to tropical. Spicy, dense and very long, with deep smoky and cherry tones carrying through the supple, velvety but vibrant finish. As usual, a stunning wine of great depth and impeccable balance.
A brilliant vintage of Cristal Rosé, this wine is perfectly knit, with all the power, freshness and complexity there in the weave. Pull it apart, and there's a lovely fruit sense of violets and pear, with chalky highlights surrounding the redder fruit and seeming to amplify all the other flavors. Or just drink it. As much as it may deplete your bank account, you'll feel, momentarily, like the richest wine geek on earth.
Intriguing earthy note marks this penetrating rosé. It touches on berry, citrus and pastry notes, shows fine density and a creamy texture. Beautifully integrated, with a long, nutty aftertaste. *Collectibles* (BS)
Hardly rosé at all – very little pinkness to the colour. Not much redness to the fruit either. Delicious creaminess though and unexpected power of white fruit on the palate. Dry, tight structure. Very long, yeasty and broad to finish. (RH) 17.5/20 points
