Another brilliant blend, the 2011 Sagacious is 38% Syrah, 34% Mourvedre and 28% Grenache, all of which spent 20 months in 40% new French oak. Black raspberry, cassis, white pepper, leather and crushed flowers all emerge from this beauty, and it stays weightless and elegant on the palate, with fantastic purity and freshness. It's hard to resist now, but it will evolve gracefully as well. Located high up on the west side of Paso Robles, at an elevation of 1,950 feet, Law Estate is run by Don and Susie Law and the wines are made by rock star winemaker Scott Hawley. This is one of the most exciting new estates in Paso Robles today, and I was blown away by the wines. These are full-throttle efforts that make the most of the appellation. (JD)
Another deep, intense wine, the 2011 Sagacious hits the palate with blue and purple fruit, smoke, lavender, violets, cloves and new leather. Darker tonalities of pure nuance run through this enticing, supple, beautifully layered Syrah/Mourvèdre/Grenache blend. Law is without question one of the most exciting and promising young estates I have seen anywhere. Don and Susie Law have spared no expense in amassing a considerable expanse of land dotted with dramatic, high-altitude vineyards on the west side of Paso Robles. Scott Hawley oversees farming and winemaking. The winery is architecturally striking but functionally quite simple. These are absolutely gorgeous, voluptuous wines made all the more remarkable by the age of the vines, which is just a few years. Law has everything in place to be in a position to challenge some of Paso's big-name estates in the near future, but its true potential goes far beyond Paso Robles. Law has the potential to establish itself as one of the top wineries in the world, and I say that as someone who has visited virtually every reference-point estate in Bordeaux, Burgundy, California and Italy within the last 12 months. This is another boozy bruiser from this ambitious winery. A blend of 38% Syrah, 34% Mourvèdre and 28% Grenache, it delivers ripe red raspberry, black peppercorns and cinnamon on the nose. It’s soft on the palate at first, then gives into a strong tannic grip, with flavors of red cherries, tobacco, licorice, cloves and iron. It drinks a tad hot. (MK)
Offers a generous mix of blackberry and cherry flavors, with spice, cedar and fresh earth notes. Firm, ripe tannins show on the long finish. Syrah, Mourvèdre and Grenache. Drink now through 2027. 593 cases made. (JL)
