The 2012 Clos de Vougeot is one the most polished and refined wines readers will taste from this site, the largest Grand Cru in the Côte de Nuits. A cool, restrained and unusually elegant nose combines various red berries with notes of dried flowers, freshly turned earth and sandalwood. There is excellent volume and intensity to the focused, intense and quite powerful medium weight plus flavors that culminate in a driving, even explosive finish that coats the mouth and lingers for an impressively long time. I very much like the harmony of elements though note that this exceptionally intense effort is unlikely to be an early drinker.
The 2012 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru offers plenty of dark berries, briary, woodland scents on the nose – deep and penetrating. The palate is very structured with one particular barrel sample showing more backbone than other. The grip and intent are both palpable on the long, cola-tinged finish that brims over with energy. Silky and sappy on entry, then suave and sharply delineated in the middle, conveying an impression of vigor to its perfumed flavors of dark fruits, minerals and noble herbs. Perfectly integrated ripe acidity contributes finesse. This very sophisticated Clos Vougeot delivers a compelling combination of gras and vibrancy.
