Era is intended to be an expression of the very best that Alpha Omega has to offer, and this bottling shows reason enough to agree. It is wonderfully concentrated and extraordinarily deep in incisive blackcurrant fruit with a myriad of carefully fit pieces, and, while very much built along the sturdily tannic, eminently age-worthy lines so favored by Alpha Omega, it shows slightly more polish to its structured style even at this age. It is sure to reward those willing to patiently wait for a decade with a wine of genuine and stunning brilliance. *Three Stars*
Bright, medium ruby-red. Black raspberry on the nose, complemented by sexy oak tones of coffee, mocha and chocolate. Boasts terrific sweetness and delineation to its flavors of plum, redcurrant and mocha. A bit less pliant and forthcoming today than the To Kalon wines, finishing with serious, noble tannins, superb length and captivating perfume. (ST)
There’s a fine wine hiding inside this Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend, which contains Cabernet Franc and Merlot. But its qualities are buried beneath strong tannins. The fruit is impossibly young, all jammy cherries and blackberries, and new oak sticks out in the form of buttered toast. It’s all very imposing, so don’t even think about drinking it anytime soon. Should begin to blossom around 2018, and will be going strong for another decade.
A dense and focused red, delivering a potent yet elegant array of dark berry, black licorice, anise, wild berry and crushed rock minerality, sustained by dark berry fruit, rich tannins and subtle floral scents. (JL)
