Features terrific fruit, with forthcoming aromas and flavors of cherry, raspberry and plum, accented by licorice, leather and tobacco details that add depth. Well-structured, but stays balanced and precise, adding mineral and woodsy elements on the finish. Excellent length. Best from 2019 through 2035. 3,750 cases made. –BS

Representing a special selection of fruit, the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Prime Donne is a dark and well-extracted wine with dark tones of cherry and blackberry backed by leather, tobacco and tar. The fruit on display is sweet and plump and you definitely get a sense of the wine's youth and its potential to evolve. Donatella Cinelli Colombini has done a very good job of matching her bolder winemaking style to the high quality of fruit on display here. Plush endnotes of sweet spice, cinnamon and toasted vanilla give the wine an international twist. I found Prime Donne to be slightly less expressive than the base Brunello from the same vintage. The wine needs a little longer to open. Donatella Cinelli Colombini has gained a loyal fan base over the years. She is an able communicator, but more importantly she has steadily maintained consistency in quality wines throughout last ten years that I have been following her work. I can't ever remember being disappointed in her wines and this batch of new releases is some of her best work yet.

Aromas of dark berry, graphite, forest floor and grilled herb mingle in the glass. The savory palate offers ripe black cherry, grilled herb, vanilla, licorice and a gamy note alongside a firm, tannic backbone. Drink after 2018.

The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Prime Donne offers a little more mid-palate depth and volume than the straight bottling, along with a slightly darker, bolder profile, but the differences are more stylistic than qualitative. Dark cherries, plums, sweet French oak and leather are some of the nuances that emerge on the round, supple finish. The oak tannins will benefit from another year or two in bottle. (AG)

Very dark ruby with narrow orange rim. Rather stalky and savoury on the nose with a hint of leather. Impressive mouthful of fruit pulled together by firm tannins. Quite a powerful style of Brunello. (WS)
