57% Zinfandel, 42% Carignane, 1% Petite Sirah
A classic Zinfandel field blend from a vineyard planted by Italian immigrants around 1900, and from one of the best producers of Zinfandel in California. The 2011 vintage was long and cool, and required a steady hand in both vineyard and cellar. The crop was small, but the fruit produced a wonderfully aromatic and intense wine. The winemaker praised the ultimate result: "This wine exemplifies why we have a deep love of old vines. It's superbly complex, rich in structure—and at moderate ripeness! It is a wine to enjoy in any season, and will be at its best over the next six to eight years."
Tasting notes from the winery: "Medium garnet. Ripe cherry and raspberry fruits, mint, sweet oak. Ripe red cherries on entry; juicy acid, gravelly mineral, mint; round tannins in a long finish."
