K&L Notes

One of the two oldest Rioja bodegas, with a history dating back to the mid 19th century, Marques de Murrieta is not resting on its laurels. Rather, they continue to produce excellent wines, big hits with their customers and critics alike. They are fully self sufficient in grapes, taking advantage their large, contiguous vineyard just outside of Logrono, which boasts plenty of old vines, a variety of terroirs ranging from chalky clay to very stony parcels, and a climate that particularly favors not only Tempranillo but some of the region's finest Mazuelo. 94 points Tim Atkins: "A step up on the already impressive 2009, this American oak aged blend of mostly Tempranillo, with 7% Mazuelo, Graciano and Garnacha is intense, spicy and perfumed, with crunchy acidity, bramble and raspberry fruit and a whiff of wild herbs." Hint of anise on the nose with oak intensity and dense, dark cherry through the palate. While acid provides lovely lift, structure is solid here, and the overall experience stays true to a lush, medium-bodied style that Murrieta does so well. Smooth with subtly tannic finish, this is a great buy for twenty bucks.

Here is more proof that Spanish wines are some of the best values in the market. From a great 2010 vintage, you get a solid taste of a reserva Rioja, starting with the sweet aromas of black cherry and vanilla. On the palate, this medium-bodied wine displays plenty of verve with zippy acidity and delicious fruit reminiscent of balsamic strawberries and spice. The finish is juicy and layered with smooth tannins, making this a super versatile dinner wine. Priced at only $20 and just hitting its prime drinking window, this is a bottle you will want to buy to drink now, and save more for later!

Deep licorice and black cherry notes show on the nose with just a hint of fine oak spices. On the palate the wine is decidedly well-built, with a tight tannin structure balancing out some lovely, fleshy fruit. Definitely a wine to decant, but drinking beautifully! This should age quite well also!

This offering from Murrieta is as pure and elegant as Rioja can be. The complex nose offers black cherry, red currant, spice, and a floral note. This medium-bodied red dances on the palate, feeling equal parts elegant and energetic. The bright cherry, raspberry, and herbaceous notes are moved along by a racy acidity, winding up in a long, softly tannic finish - with a lingering vanilla note. At this price, I strongly encourage you to buy this wine by the case!

Marques de Murrieta was one of the two oldest, historical bodegas to put Rioja on the map in the mid-19th century (the other one was Marqués de Riscal). It is also an estate wine with fruit coming from various parcels on their property just outside of Logroño. A blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano, this is always one of the very good Reserva Riojas on the market.
