K&L Notes

TWR's "Toru" (meaning three in Maori) is a traditional field blend of Alsatian varietals Gewürztraminer, Riesling and Pinot Gris, as you might find in an Edelzwicker bottling. The fruit is entirely hand-selected from Jason and Anna's BioGro Certified organic vineyard. All the grapes are co-fermented, giving the blend its completely seamless nature and wonderful richness of flavor and texture along with vibrant freshness and minerality. The wine is almost completely dry with very little, if any perceivable sweetness. What certainly is perceivable is the wine's cacophony of floral notes, white peach, honeydew melon, and jasmine. The palate shows similar qualities, with broad, rich flavors and texture. The old vine Riesling (planted in 1979) adds great minerality and a steely, citric cut to balance the richness and exuberance of the other, more exotic varietals. The co-ferment and extended fine lees contact gives the wine incredible length and persistence on the palate. This just might be the ultimate summer sipper. So quaffable that just about anyone will fall for it... but also retaining enough complexity, depth and "nerd factor" that even the most jaded of wine geeks would have to be excited by this wine! Gewurztraminer, Riesling and Pinot Gris join forces to become Toru, the fun and creative Alsatian white blend from Te Whare Ra in Marlborough. On the nose, flowers, orange blossom, citrus and lime emanate from the glass, a good lead-up to the dynamic taste profile: the refreshing citrus zest typical of New Zealand, highlighted by a hint of flowers and sweet melon and a nice acidic finish. You can really taste all three varietals! This wine is fun, delicious and a great pairing with seafood.

I like everything TWR puts out, which I may have mentioned before. I am glad I like everything they do, for many reasons, not the least of which because I tried their white blend Toru entirely because I like their wines so much. I am so glad I did try it because I think this wine is simply incredible. Fruity and floral, honeyed yet dry, hints of spice and minerals, this blend is so well balanced. The Riesling and Gewurztraminer give it an immediate beauty on the nose and palate, blending rich fruit and spicy floral notes, and the Pinot Gris adds the right amount of mineral and slightly dry finish. White blends may not be as popular yet as single varietal whites, but I think they are well worth exploring and getting into.

This could be a perfect Indian summer white. A fun field--vineyard 5182, to be exact--blend. This has the cool poise and drive of Riesling, the subtle richness of Pinot Gris and finishes with just enough of that Gewurztraminer spice. This is not a sweet wine, there is plenty of fruit and spice but no sugar--do not let the varietals scare you away. There is a lot going on here, but not in stuffy geeky way. Chill this down and drink it up!

This is a great white blend coming from our friends at TWR. The blend of Gewurztraminer, Riesling and Pinot Gris shows the elegance, soils, and light refreshing characters of all three varietals. Plenty of stone fruits, bright acidity, a balanced dryness; and still it has great richness and weight on the finish. A great joy to drink, especially in this hot and dry weather.

Fun, geeky, and delicious all rolled into a wine. This wine has something for everybody, from sipping on the porch, to marveling at the cohesiveness achieved from co fermentation. Effusive and rambunctious out of the glass, orange blossom water, kiwi, fresh peaches, it draws you in with lightness. The palate is both racy and fruit filled, buoyant with crushed rock minerality, vibrant with apricot and peach. From a producer that hangs their hats on their aromatic whites, they have something to be proud of in this wine. I can’t wait to drink this over the summer, and talk about it with as many people who will listen.

Made from aromatic varietals (predominately Gewurztraminer) this little blend refreshing white will wash away all your troubles. Sauvignon Blanc and Gris round out the backend. We've been waiting for years to build up TWR enough before bringing this in. A staff favorite.

I have been begging Ryan Woodhouse to bring this wine in for the last two years. And now- it's finally here! If you love easy drinking, aromatic yet very elegant white wine for spring or summer, this is the wine for you! A gorgeous blend of Gewurztraminer, Riesling and Pinot Gris, this wine shows lemony citrus, honeysuckle, plump apricot and white peach, with lively acidity and fabulously balanced sweetness to acid that leave the wine feeling fresh and bright instead of cloying and dense. An incredible value and a must for easy summertime entertaining!
