Tasting Notes

Once in a great while you find wines from the Mâcon so good that tasting them blind you are forced to apply some much higher (and more expensive) appellation to it. Often, such a wine comes from hillside vineyards, with better drainage and cooler nights. This is such a wine, from the slopes below the giant monolith of rock that is Solutré. Domaine Renaud is a small operation, making Mâcon, Pouilly-Fuissé and St. Veran from 12 hectares of estate vineyards. Their cellar is modern, and they use upright ovals for many of the wines, and stainless for others. This value is a great alternative to California Chardonnay and an entry into white Burgundy.

Very gracious wine, with the bright and delicate tropical fruit notes framed by the intense minerality. Complex and yet quite easy to drink.

Looking for a good, value priced, balanced Chardonnay? Then you've found the right wine! The vintage has delivered a more taut wine than Macon Charnay typically produces. Lemon verbena, wet gravel, and lime notes show on the nose of this cool and refreshing, medium bodied wine, with the minerality subtly carrying through to the palate. Quite the deal, this.

The Mâcon-Charnay from Domaine Renaud is the best crossover wine from California to Burgundy in the whole store. It has all of the plump richness that people love in California wine, but without the oak, residual sugar or excessive alcohol. This is our number one recommendation for party Chardonnay, as it will be plenty refreshing while still having the breadth and richness that people love. It is great for a mixed group and inexpensive enough for Tuesday night!

Domaine Renaud are back with another portfolio of deliciously crisp, clean, and mineral-driven wines from the Mâconnais at a great price! This displays thirst-quenching acidity, great quality, value and everyday drinkability!

From a single "Estate" hillside vineyard (Charnay) in the Macon district of Southern Burgundy, this lush, eminently drinkable Macon is our fifth vintage (I think?) that we have directly imported and may be the best to date. This beauty drinks more like a single vineyard, village production (i.e., Saint Veran or Pouilly Fuisse) rather than a general district wine from Macon. A lovely aroma of apples, lime zest, and white peach is supported by a distinctive slate-like to seashell mineral tone. In the mouth, it is refreshing, bright, and mouthwatering, which carries over to a clean, crisp, flavorful finish. The Bean has demanded, as she usually does, that I bring home cases of this Gem, and you need to do the same. An Amazing Value! Don’ miss it! ***** 13.0% ABV *****

The Macon Charnay is another winner from Domaine Pascal & Mireille Renaud. All of their 2014 whites are extremely fresh, pure and clean. The Macon Charnay shows hints of tropical fruit, with excellent mid-palate richness followed by a crisp, mineral driven finish. Very solid wine for the money!

While I've been a fan of the Solutre' from Renaud over the years the last two vintages I prefer the Charnay, its mineral driven center perfectly balances the wine's supple mouth feel and has a distinct and focused finish.

A sexy wine with a seductive nose of lime blossoms and Georgia peaches with a palate that showcases Asian pears, guava and a touch of mango all nestled against good acidity, minerality and just a hint of toasty oak. This medium-bodied wine display excellent balance and has a creamy, rich feel. Ideal for the Chardonnay fan that wants a French twist.

The Renaud Macon wines are always some of the best value wines at K&L. For me the Solutre has always been my favorite, but over the last to vintages the Charnay has just shined. A little more fruit, a touch more texture, more zip and a slightly longer finish. Buy both, but if you can only have buy one, get the Charnay.

The entry level Renaud wines are always such a pleasure. Wonderful stainless steal Chard, usually a little ripe and fatter, but this year both the Solutree and the Charnay are vivacious and totally satisfying. The Charnay is differentiated by a slightly more advanced citrus (tangerine?) and a tiny lactic note. A wonderful value for anyone looking for no oak Chard.
