A 2005 Volnay Santenots Vieilles Vignes offers high-toned aromas of cherry distillate and cherry pits, marrowy meatiness and imposing breadth on the palate, and a beautiful penetration of dark fruits, savory meatiness, and chalky, stony minerality in the finish. This displays considerable subtlety of flavor and a refined density of tannins that doesn’t weigh it down but suggests the right structure is present for at least twelve or fifteen years of fascinating development.
(the vines here range from 35 to 100 years of age, according to Laurent, but he doesn't indicate Vieilles Vignes on the label in the lesser years) Good deep, bright red. Reserved but nuanced nose suggests dark cherry and minerals. Densely packed and rather powerful, with a flavor of dark chocolate. Not particularly sweet or pliant today. Finishes with big, broad tannins and a trace of youthful dryness.
Velvety crimson appeal on the nose. This wine wraps itself around the palate with a bit of meatiness and then lovely freshness on the palate. 16.5/20 points. (JR)
