While Bas-Armagnac gets all the press and the Haut-Armagnac gets completely ignored, the Tenareze region of Armagnac is quietly producing some of the best brandies in the world. Much like the Borderies region in Cognac, the Tenareze brandies seem to have more fruit and a bit more life than the more classic Armagnac style. Using only new or first-fill barrels for the beginning years of maturation, the Armagnacs have richness, weight, and spice. The 2001 vintage is going to be a bourbon-drinker's delight: there's a rich, round mouthfeel of charred oak and creamy vanilla, supplemented with more texture from the raisined fruit. It's anchored entirely in richness, and there's plenty of spice on the finish to keep it interesting. Distilled from 100% Folle Blanche (a more flavorful and complex varietal for Armagnac) it's a slam-dunk deal if there ever was one.

    The return of the 2001 Pellehaut is exciting and this is as good or possibly better than I remember. It still presents itself with super-smooth vanilla and oak spice and a lovely hint of creme brulée and dried orchard fruit in the mid-palate. Light on its feet and easy to drink, this is a bottle that may go down just a little too quickly if you are not careful.

    The 2001 offers all of the great flavors that one expects from Pellehaut Armagnacs. This vintage is soft with nice spice flavors and is very balanced and easy to drink. Not as concentrated as some of the other vintage offerings, it is a delicious pleasure to drink. The above is what I wrote in 2015. The extra 2 years has added a little more richness and touch more concentration.

    Golden amber in hue, this Armagnac has a great candied nose full of sweet caramel, a touch of apples, and stone fruit, and creme brulee. The palate is rich and full of spices, in particular a robust cinnamon bark and it clearly bares the hallmarks of sweet oak. An easy drinking beauty!

    Now 16 years of age and at 49.8%, this little number is just as I remember it: full of sweet oak spices, but now with more fruit and even a floral element that comes through from the Folle Blanche. Those looking for Armagnac that tastes like brandy will love this. It has the richness of a great whiskey, but it's totally vinous on the finish with raisins and grapey elements that linger long. Fantastic.
