Expressive in oak, earth and clove with cinnamon-cola, this savory, complex wine is also impressive in its ability to offer crisp and focused lines of citrus and fresh-picked raspberry. It teeter-totters the variety's ability to be both fruit-forward and elusively hard to reach. Streaks of thyme and rosemary figure into the mix. Drink now through 2023.
The 2013 Pinot Noir Rochioli Riverblock Vineyard has a very dense ruby/purple color and a beautiful nose of gun flint, raspberries, black cherries and blackcurrants. The wine displays full-body, super-duper richness and ripeness, beautiful minerality, and a long, long finish. This is a superb Pinot Noir and one of the best I tasted from this vintage in the Russian River. Drink it over the next 10+ years. (RP)
An overtly spicy nose mixes notes of anise, clove, sandalwood and tea with those of menthol, raspberry, cherry and plum. There is a lovely sense of energy to the sleek and surprisingly pliant middle weight flavors that are shaped by notably fine-grained tannins on the complex and lingering finale. This is both stylish and harmonious yet doesn't seem to have the same mid-palate density of the best in the range. To be clear this is still a lovely effort and in particular offers excellent depth but it doesn't quite appear to be at its usual very high level of quality.
The 2013 Pinot Noir Rochioli Riverblock Vineyard is one of the sleekest wines in the range. Silky tannins and lifted aromatics add to the wine's finessed feel. I expected a little more richness from this site, but other than that the 2013 is nicely done. It is a classic Russian River Pinot built on succulent fruit and fleshy texture. (AG)
