There is a new 'village' red, the 2013 Villa de San Lorenzo, which is sourced from the existing vineyards Chano Villar and Lombano, plus a third one planted some 75 years ago that they purchased next to the new Villarín called Fontairo. It was part fermented in cement vats and part in French barrique with indigenous yeasts. Only 30% of the volume matured in third-use French barriques while the rest was kept in the tanks until blending and bottling. The nose screams 'cool climate red' with some hints of acid berries, something earthy and a vegetal twist; the palate is medium-bodied, with almost unnoticeable tannins and soft acidity. Fresh and approachable naked Mencía. (LG)
