Tasting Notes

Praise from Stephen Tanzer: "Leslie Behrens and Bob Hitchcock (Behrens is the winemaker and Hitchcock the money man) began making wine in 1993 in the wilds of Humboldt County, then moved to an isolated spot at the top of Spring Mountain, where they built a winery in time for the 1999 harvest. This is very much a garage operation: Behrens and Hitchcock work with very ripe fruit ("all of our wines are high in alcohol," admits Behrens), ferment at high temperature, doing a lot of punching down of the cap, and use a very low percentage of new barrels to age their wines. Production has grown slowly and steadily to about 4,500 cases per year. These are wild and sometimes rustic wines with clearly expressed personalities; they are the antithesis of the cookie-cutter Merlots and Cabs produced by most North Coast wineries to the specifications of their marketing departments."
