The 1998 Barolo exhibits a saturated plum/ruby color as well as a classic Nebbiolo perfume of melted road tar, rose petals, tobacco, and sweet cherry jam. Dense, moderately tannic, and balanced, it possesses great fruit on the attack, mid-palate, and finish. The 1998 is concentrated, with sweet tannin and fragrance. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2018. Luigi Einaudi was Italy’s first president. The estate was founded in 1897, and to this day is run by his granddaughter, Paola Einaudi. The wine has a very floral nose of rose petals and lavender. Raspberry flavors and a woodiness derived from Slavonian oak are complex yet finish soft and appealing.
Full ruby-red. Black raspberry, currant, maple syrup and oak on the nose. Sweet, tangy, youthfully aggressive flavors of black raspberry, menthol and oak. A rather serious but supple normale, finishing with substantial, broad tannins and a hint of medicinal austerity.
Pretty aromas of roses, prunes and cedar follow through to medium body, with firm tannins and a floral, berry aftertaste. Best after 2005. (JS)
