Another outrageous effort is the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon (100% Cabernet Sauvignon). Its opaque purple color is followed by aromas of pen ink, graphite, blackberry and blueberry liqueur, charcoal and flowers. Dense, full-bodied, multidimensional, long, silky and opulent, this stunning Cabernet can be drunk now or cellared for 15-20 years. These 2012s, made by winemaking consultant Mark Herold for proprietor Robert Kamen, are the finest wines yet produced by this small boutique operation located largely with the relatively new AVA of Moon Mountain. There are 1,800 cases of the Cabernet Sauvignon, only 150 cases of the Cashmere, 125 cases of the Syrah, and less than 100 cases of the Cabernet Franc.
Another explosive wine, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon is a real head-turner. The radiance of the vintage comes through in spades. Dark, voluptuous and intense, the 2012 flows across the palate with notable depth. Ripe, silky tannins support a core of dark red stone fruits, spices, wild flowers, cedar and new French oak. Robert Kamen's vineyard in the new Moon Mountain AVA is one of the most picturesque sites in Sonoma. Modern vine training gives these mountain wines as interpreted by Mark Herold little more textural depth and richness than is customarily found in other nearby sites. The newest addition to the range is a Cabernet Franc, a wine that is already quite impressive, especially considering the wines were just planted a few years ago.
