Darker and deeper than most. Almost overripe notes on the nose! Then very loose and formless on the palate with a great big hole where the fruit concentration should be. Astringent finish. (JR) 15 Points
Michel Arnaud continues to fashion beautiful wines and has certainly eclipsed the general level of quality for the vintage with his 2008 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes. From the estate’s 28+ acres of vines, this blend of 60% Grenache and the rest equal parts Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsault and Counoise aged in concrete tanks and foudre exhibits a dark ruby/plum color along with peppery, spicy, black cherry and black currant notes intermixed with a hint of graphite. Lush, round, generous and hitting most of the sweet spots on the palate, it is a hedonistic Chateauneuf du Pape with more weight and richness than most of its peers. Consume it over the next 5-7 years. (RP)
