Tasting Notes

Ch. L’Avocat is from the small commune of Cerons, which is located just north of Barsac and Sauternes in the southern Graves appellation. I met Nicola Allison at a small conference of Women from Bordeaux and Napa Valley in Napa earlier. She followed my advice by sending her wines to our hotel in April to be tasted and Clyde and I liked them. I followed up by visiting the estate almost 8 weeks later and was shown the gravely, plateau vineyards by her husband Sean who manages the vines. The vineyards were purchased by the Allisons in 2002; the fruit was previously sold to Mouton Rothschild. 300 feet above the Garrone river, the vineyards have stunning views of the lovely Cotes de Bordeaux, this elevation is a key factor for great drainage and the soil is loaded with different color gravel that impart the textbook minerality both their whites and reds feature. Dusty up front, with cherry fruit and a foresty quality reminiscent of fall leaves, L’Avocat Rouge really shows off both its Graves terroir and the easygoing 2012 vintage. Medium-bodied for Bordeaux with lovely tannins, minerally, subtly earthy and delicious, this manages to be both green and velvety, and great for the price.

This wine showcases not only its appellation but the vintage as well. It is approachable, but a passage through the decanter will round it up. Cassis, brown sugar, and loads of minerality framed by firm but not at all harsh tannins. A wine to dress up any dinner.

Always a great buy. The 2012 A'Avocat offers dark fruit flavors that are balanced out with hints of minerals. It will go well with hearty foods and will open up if decanted at least an hour in advance.

The grapes for this wine come from a parcel that previously sold its grapes to Mouton Rothschild. The quality shows! Deep, red fruits with that textbook minerality of Ceron grown fruit. Quite supple, with integrated tannins and a lovely, quite soft texture.
    Top Value!

As is the case with their Blanc, this is serious wine, not for the weak and timid. Textbook Graves wine, strong deep fruit with hints of cherry, cassis and earth. Decant a couple hours to drink young, and it will age very nicely. My house red for years!

Always a great buy from a fine property. 2012 is soft and mineral with enough tannin to cellar it a few years. Sean and Nikki Allison always make a value red at their beautiful property.
    Drink from 2015 to 2020
