Of the three Beckstoffer Vineyards, it’s pretty much a joyride as to which one readers may prefer. The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard of St. Helena is a knockout: a broad, opulent, round Cabernet fruitbomb with lots of cassis, incense, and blackberry. The wine is full-bodied, generously endowed with terrific purity, texture and length. This is a star and, believe it or not, it’s come in well under 15% natural alcohol. This beauty can be drunk now or cellared for 15 or more years. From one of Northern California’s most accomplished and respected wine consultants and producers, the 2012s and 2013s will create high expectations, and readers are unlikely to be disappointed by Paul Hobbs and his team. Drink 2014-2030. (RP)
One of the highlights in this range, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard is fabulous. An exotic melange of blue/black fruit, graphite, smoke, new leather and cloves meld together in a complex, structured Cabernet endowed with superb pedigree, class and site-specific character. This pebbly site in St. Helena often confers verticality and structure. Those are exactly the qualities that come through most decisively, while the radiance of the vintage lies a bit in the background, at least today. Paul Hobbs and his long-time winemaker Megan Baccitich have turned out a spectacular set of 2012s and 2013s. As always, the Hobbs Cabernets are dark, intense and powerful in style, with considerable textural richness and opulence. In both 2012 and 2013 the wines seem more marked by their site specific qualities rather than the respective vintages. In my view, the most unique wines in the range are Stagecoach, Las Piedras, To-Kalon and Nathan Coombs, Hobbs' newly acquired estate vineyard in Coombsville. (AG) 94+
A full-throttle and rich red with round, soft tannins and a juicy, flavorful finish. Lots of fruit and intensity. Yet there is a tension and brightness. Reaches the limits of almost high-octane. Drink or hold.
Well integrated, polished and savoury. There seems to be a strong theme running through all the 10, 11 and 12 vintages of this wine. Very refined. 17.5/20
