K&L Notes

Guigal's "La Doriane" Viognier from Condrieu is on a roll, gaining Wine Advocate scores of 96-98 points from the 2009 through 2013 vintages. Aged in new French oak, this bottling tends toward a more opulent style. Praise for the vintners from Wine Advocate's Jeb Dunnuck: "The father/son team of Marcel and Philippe Guigal continue to keep their estate at the top of the hierarchy in the Rhône Valley. All the way from their inexpensive Côtes du Rhône to their top-end Côte Rôties and Hermitage, the attention to detail and focus on quality is unmatched....I'll say it again here, this estate is producing some of the most incredible and singular wines in the world." I was fortunate enough to visit this vineyard in early 2014 and it was remarkable. The steep slopes, the quality of the site, the care of the vines, there is so much detail behind making this wine. On the nose, ripe peaches and honeysuckle come forth, followed by grilled bread and toasted spices. The palate is exquisite with richness and underlying acidity. A year or two down is prescribed, you want the oak and fruit to fully integrate, but what a powerhouse it is now.
