K&L Notes

This all Pinot Noir Champagne is a blend of many small plots on the Josselin estate in Gyé-Sur-Seine. It is aged for three years on the lees and contains fruit from a minimum of two harvests. This is pure, clean, driven Champagne that still maintains the signature cool black Pinot Noir fruit. It is balanced in every way, and perfect for a refreshing aperitif. This is the most intriguing of all Pinot Noir Champagnes in the store, especially given the extraordinary value that it offers. Looking at it, I would never be able to tell that it was made from red grapes- Jean-Felix Josselin presses his grapes very delicately with a pair of very old basket presses that are the best, and the most labor intensive kind in Champagne! Cinnamon and I enjoyed this bottle with some “duck sushi”- sliced cooked duck breast served over risotto shaped into sushi rice shape this past weekend. While this wine is clean and refreshing enough to have on its own, the clean earth and Pinot power really came on with the food. At this price, I will be drinking a lot of this flexible, delicious Champagne and I will no doubt have more pairing suggestions soon!

Bright, vibrant and chalky Blanc de Noirs under $30? Welcome to the K&L direct import program. Compare any of the big brands with similar attributes — entirely estate grown fruit, notable Kimmeridgian chalkiness, over 3 years on the lees — and you will undoubtedly pay at least twice the price. This has rich red apple and white cherry fruit flavors with beautiful acid, and impeccable balance. If you are shopping for Champagne, do yourself and your bank account a favor and try this grower-producer.

Jean Josselin describe their champange as "A champange you can shake by the hand." Which, to them, means it is friendly and approachable. I think it is that and more. The Cuvee de Jean is made from 100% Pinot Noir grown on the same soil as in Chabis, the Kimmeridgian clay. The pinot fruit brings finness and floral character to a lifted nose and streamlined acidity. A slight hint of tart blackberries intertwine harmoniously with the elegant minerality from the soil. So, while the wine balanced and comfortable, it is also unique and complex- a good friend to have indeed.

Here is another great find in Champagne. Very well priced and a wonderfully charming bubbly. Perfect for groups as this Champagne is not too toasty or oaky and has such a lovely palate feel that it will please almost anyone.

This is a fantastic example of fresh, vibrant and downright refreshing Champagne. It's nuanced and delicate for those who like an understated style with pronounced minerality and under ripe green pear. It's dry, has great acidity and would pair well with a wide range of foods or by itself.

This cuvee focuses on the fruit. That is not to say it is ripe or tropical, though; think more along the lines of crisp Asian pear and citrus peel. While clean, there is a pleasingly weighty texture here, before the underlying acidity wipes the slate, and a touch of light almond oil nuttiness, hiding in the wings, makes its presence known.

It's hard to find good Champagne for under $35, so I was suspect of this affordable bottling until I tasted it for myself and found my new favorite NV. This one is crisp, refreshing, and loaded with juicy apple and white peach flavors while maintaining a dry, tense profile that will pair with countless dishes from sushi to chili. Throw it on ice and enjoy your evening.

This extraordinarily affordable release from Jean Josselin is simply delicious and very mineral driven for 100% Pinot Noir. Minerals, sea salt, white fruit and orange blossoms on the nose. Melons, spices, white fruit and Anjou pear on the palate with a lingering, mildly acidic finish. A really nice introductory bubbly to this line and one of my favorite bargains.
