Tasting this wine side by side with the 2009 les Gémeaux was a very interesting experiment, and I was quite surprised that I slightly preferred the blended Chapelle bottling. The wine is a touch more evolved on both the nose and palate than the ’09 les Gémeaux, but also more complex. The lovely bouquet wafts from the glass in a fine blend of plums, black cherries, cocoa powder, violets, lovely soil tones, a touch of fresh thyme and a discreet base of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and already quite suave on the attack, with a lovely core and fine soil signature, ripe tannins and a long, focused and complex finish. Fine, fine juice.
This is also quite pretty with a perfumed, cool and airy nose of high-toned and spicy red pinot fruit that evidences plenty of floral influence as well as earth and mineral undertones. This is especially fresh for the vintage with excellent verve on the intense, detailed and restrained full-bodied flavors that culminate in a powerful, focused, quite firm and moderately austere finish that delivers impressive persistence. There is good muscle here and while the mouth feel is not exactly robust, there is plenty of size and weight.
The 2009 Chapelle-Chambertin caresses the palate from start to finish. Fresh and vibrant throughout, the Chapelle comes across as strikingly beautiful in every dimension. Dried flowers, spices and berries wrap around the finish. David and Nicolas Rossignol began harvesting on September 12th. They used a fair amount of whole clusters, ranging from 33% or so for the 1ers up to 50% for the Grand Crus. The wines saw 14-21 days of cuvaison. After debourbage, the wines were racked into oak, roughly 15% new barrels for the villages, 33% for the 1ers and 50% for the Grand Crus. The malos were early and quick, and the wines were bottled between January and March 2011. (AG)
Wonderfully inviting, pure, delicate cherry nose. Silky cherry fruit within a firm but smooth framework. Already seductive though not overly soft. Elegant, succulent and very long. Delicious. (JH) 17.5/20 points
