There is no question the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is the most backward and brooding of the wines I tasted from Pride. Firm tannins frame an expressive core of dark red berries, licorice, scorched earth, tobacco, smoke and incense. Today, the 2009 is far too young to offer true pleasure, but it is unquestionably striking. Hints of iron, graphite and smoke add complexity on the finish supported by huge mountain tannins. The 2009 is super distinctive and loaded with personality. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029. (AG)
This gigantic Cabernet is one of Pride’s biggest ever. Blackberries, cherries and chocolate nibs explode in the mouth, but it’s no mere fruit bomb. The tannins and acids lend it integrity, and the finish is miraculously dry. A superb job, and as good as it is now, should develop over the next 12–15 years, depending on how old you like your Cabs. *Cellar Selection*
Medium ruby-red. Aromas of dark berries, violet and flowers are complicated by exotic citrus and white peach notes. Sweet, smooth and seamless, with a lovely fine-grained texture and good lift to the very primary dark fruit, mineral and tar flavors. Boasts outstanding intensity, balance and sweetness of fruit, with nothing overdone about it. The youthful finish features very silky tannins. One can see the positive effect of the gentler destemmer here. (ST) 93+
Offering a generous display of loamy earth, currant, blackberry and baking spice elements, this is nicely structured, with just the right amount of firmness in the tannins and acidity. Elegant and graceful. Drink now through 2023. (JL)
Immediately impressing as a wine of real substance and rife with ripe cherries and very sweet oak, Pride's latest Reserve is a plush and immensely flavorful effort that is exceptionally well-made for the very big wine that it is. Its grasp on fruit is sure and insistent, and its supporting tannins ensure improvement with age. It will never be accused of subtlety, but it is quite complex and will become more so with time. We urge that it be left alone in the cellar for no fewer than five years and expect it to grow for ten or more.
