From a more normal year, the 2012 The Maven (91% Grenache and 9% Syrah all from the Torrin Vineyard) reveals a vibrant purple color as well as a rocking bouquet of ripe cherry and black raspberry fruits, loads of earth and loamy soil-like minerality, medium to full body, and an elegant, seamless texture. The tannins are nicely managed, it’s beautifully balanced, and is a terrific example of Grenache from California.
Moving more and more toward a 100% Grenache cuvee (the 2013 is all Grenache), the 2012 The Maven is 91% Grenache and 9% Syrah that was roughly 30% whole clusters. It has a perfumed, floral streak in its sweet, red and black raspberry, cracked pepper, cumin and dried violet bouquet. This gives way to a full-bodied, supple and seamless 2012 that has silky tannin and a solid finish. Drink through 2030. (JD)
Deep, bright ruby. Ripe raspberry, cherry and smoky Indian spices on the highly perfumed nose. Densely packed and alluringly sweet, offering vibrant red berry and cherry liqueur flavors and a hint of candied rose. Gains weight and expands with air, finishing silky, spicy and long, with an intense raspberry note. This is a striking example of New World Grenache, admittedly with Syrah lending a helping hand.
