  Ruby-red. Blackberry, cherry, sassafras and rose petal on the smoky nose. Pungent, spicy and broad, offering good weight to its dark berry jam, herb and spicecake flavors. Picks up a wild, cured meat nuance with air that carries through a warm, powerful finish firmed by juicy acidity and dusty tannins. (ST)

  The only 2012 I tasted was the 2012 Pinot Noir Trenton View Vineyard. Offering an education in Pinot Noir, this wine’s washed out, light ruby/garnet color suggests it could be a rose. However, aromas of sassafras, plum, pomegranate and a whiff of cherries soar from the glass. Sensual, disarming and charming with more flavor depth and texture than one would guess by looking at the color, it finished at a lofty 14.6% alcohol, and can be drunk over the next several years or longer. Readers familiar with Burgundy’s Domaine Dujac’s style will enjoy this particular bottling from Joseph Swan. (RP)

  This fantastic vineyard turned out a wine that is a light, translucent ruby in 2012 but with an abundance of flavor and character. There are woodsy aromas of rhubarb, plum skin and underbrush that are wilder and much deeper than the color would suggest, and a middle of macerated plums and baked cherries. This is surprisingly gutsy and robust for a middle aged wine and is drinking very well right now.

  For many decades the iconic wines of Joseph Swan have held a very special place in the hearts of our staff and customers alike. The legendary Joe Swan is considered by many as one of the most influential growers and winemaker's to have ever crushed grapes in California. His steadfast dedication to honest, transparent wines of place has been a guiding principle to generations of winemakers ever since. Current Joseph Swan owner/winemaker, Rod Berglund was mentored by Joe and in fact married Joe's step-daughter. He has been making the wines here ever since Joe's passing in 1988. These wines fully embrace minimal intervention and layered depth over up front power. These wines are every bit as much about savory complexity and terroir as they are about forward fruit. The 2012 Trenton View is absolutely stunning. Hailing from a small, four acre hilltop block that overlooks the original Trenton Estate plantings. This block is from a mix of Dijon clones planted in prime Goldridge soils in the Laguna Ridge sub-region of the Russian River Valley. The wine is classic Swan; brambly fruit with lots of hedgerow and undergrowth mixed with the earthy red fruits and ripe berries. Savory notes of leather, black tea, truffle and tilled soil. The texture is wondrously soft and elegant caressing palate and finishing with a lift of baking spice and rosewater. This has developed so nicely in bottle thanks to it's perfect provenance, straight from the winery to K&L! A stunning bottle of beautifully aged Pinot Noir for an absolute song. California Pinot and Burgundy drinkers alike take note. We took every case available…when it's gone, it's gone.
