The 2014 Milk & Honey checks in as an interesting blend of 30% Tempranillo, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Syrah and the rest Grenache, Mourvedre and Petit Verdot. It offers lots of sweet black currant fruit, cedar, toasted bread, leather and dried herbs in a savory, forward and nicely textured style. There's a firm edge to the tannin (no doubt from the Tempranillo), so give it a year, and drink bottles over the following 5-6. One of my favorite estates in the Central Coast is Russell From's Herman Story, who makes unapologetic rich, layered, flavor loaded wines that are a joy to drink. (JD)
Opaque ruby. Spice- and smoke-accented red and dark berries and vanilla on the deeply perfumed nose; a touch of mocha adds complexity. Plush, expansive cherry liqueur and cassis flavors show an undertone of smoky minerality that adds lift and bite. Picks up a floral pastille quality with air and shows impressive power on the spice-tinged finish, which is framed by supple, harmonious tannins. Try to ignore the "16.2 percent alcohol" on the label because, while unquestionably a rich, powerful wine, it wears its ABV quite well. (JR)
