Praise from Antonio Galloni's Vinous: "La Monacesca, one of the best producers of Verdicchio wines, takes its name from the Benedictine monks who arrived in the area of Matelica in the 10th century, building a monastery (monaco, or monk in English, hence La Monacesca). The estate was founded in 1966, and the passionate Aldo Cifola now runs the estate’s roughly 30 hectares. Through the years, La Monacesca has produced some of Italy’s greatest white wines, especially the Riserva Mirum, which boasts texture and precision not unlike that of a grand cru white Burgundy. The estate also produces a red wine (Camerte) and even a Chardonnay (only in the best years), and although both are above average compared to similar wines made elsewhere in the Marche, Verdicchio is the name of the game here. La Monacesca’s was probably the best line-up of wines I tasted from the Marche this year." (6/2015)

    This is a beautiful, full-bodied and quite powerful Verdicchio with great focus and concentration. Golden with flecks of green with aromas of honey and almond, with persistent briny mineral notes. The wine has an almost oily mouthfeel and noticeable tannin from skin contact that can stand up to any cream sauce. This wine would be a great complement to a hearty bouillabaisse!

    With a higher and older vineyard site and a longer growing season (on the vine until late October) than other wines in the region, the Mirum is deeper, broader and has more complex aromatics. The full weight of the wine is paired with fresh tropical and orchard fruit as well citrus peel and baking spice. It is complemented by a lifting acidity and fresh minerality. Balance and complexity will have you returning to your glass.

    This rich Verdicchio Di Matelica from La Monacesca impressed me with Meursault like richness and excellent focus. If you haven't experimented with the better whites of Italy, there is no better time than now. This wine has the scale, complexity and the balance that I would only expect from a much more expensive wine.

    I could almost see this passing as a ringer amidst a blind tasting of Vouvrays. Lemon peel, peach pie, apricot, bergamot, spice and honey waft headily from this from this rich, full-bodied white wine. While this has concentration and depth to its honey, flower and spice flavors, matching its voluptuous texture, this wine shows its pedigree in the firm, lively, cleansing finish, bowing out with echoes of spice and citrus pith and completely effacing the luxuriant, seductive first act. Quite a show!

    As fine as the regular bottling from this estate is, the Mirum takes Verdicchio to another level. It's a substantial white with very primary aromas of honey, acacia flowers and minerals, and a richly fruited and textured mouthful balanced with impressive acidity. There's more of everything, as Mirum is complex, impeccably integrated and long on finish and personality.

    I was first introduced to this wine with the 2012 vintage and I was instantly hooked. Now with the new vintage in here at K&L I am even more a fan of this style of wine and of this Verdichio in particular. There is a richness in the nose and on the palate, complex fruits and citrus play so well with each other. Bright acid lifts the wine and gives it a long and lingering finish. This wine is amazingly refreshing for its complexity, a great wine to bring to formal dinner, or share a bottle with someone while watching the sunset.

    Matelica is my favorite DOC for Verdicchio, the inland Apennine valley full of marine sediments that has a true continental climate and always gives wines with verve, bright burst and...richness. The 2013 Monacesca Riserva Mirum shows powerful structure and depth of flavor; with its later harvest (starting the third week of October) the grapes achieve total physiological ripeness of flavor without losing balance. That leads to the deeper aromatics, that show more complete flavors, less green and more complex fruit on the palate. The amazing thing is that even with the ripeness this wine has great acidity and real aging ability. Yes, aging ability: I’ve had them back to the early 1980s, yes that’s not a misprint, still vibrant complex showing its real terroir. This is truly a superb wine and for the price and outstanding bargain from one of Italy’s TOP indigenous varieties.
