The 2012 Pinot Noir Ceras is Maggie Harrison's mineral take of Pinot Noir (she actually uses the word "aerial" in her technical sheet). It does indeed offer an ethereal bouquet that is just so succinct: a carapace of dark cherry and blackcurrant fruit interspersed with cold granite, walnut and smoke scents that are beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins, a lot of salinity and superb tension all the way through to the finish. What a wonderful Pinot Noir - the kind of wine I can guarantee you will finish to the final drop. Never judge wine by the look of the winery. Pulling up outside Antica Terra, there is no sign indicating that this austere, drab warehouse in downtown Dundee is de facto home to some of Oregon’s finest, most thoughtfully and meticulously produced wines. Vivid ruby-red. Heady mineral- and spice-tinged aromas of fresh red berries and cherry, with a suave floral overtone gaining strength in the glass. Pure, focused and appealingly sweet, offering mineral-driven raspberry and rose pastille flavors and a bracing jolt of blood orange on the back half. Finishes sappy, nervy and long, with building spiciness and supple tannins that sneak up slowly. (NM)
The earthy, licorice and tomato leaf flavors are more prominent than the dark fruit lurking behind them. Comes together into a generous finish, playing against serious tannins. Needs time. Best after 2016. (Web Only-2015) (HS)
