K&L Notes

Another fantastic single vineyard Pinot from Oakridge, this time it's the Willowlake Vineyard Pinot Noir. Oakridge's wines re-define what many people think of Australian wines...they're the polar opposite of the over-ripe, over-extracted, "Fruit Bombs" people often wrongly associate with the country. These wines are about balance, elegance and refinement. A Master Sommelier (whom shall remain nameless,) that I tasted blind on one of their Pinot Noirs thought it was Premier Cru Savigny-Les-Beaune from Burgundy! That's how focused, mineral and bright these Pinots are. The Willowlake bottling has those trademark aromas and flavors we have come to know and love from Oakridge; dusty, crunchy red fruit, forest berries, leaf litter and earth. A lovely expression of this grape that combines the purity of fruit with some of the alluring earthiness Pinot can provide. Low alcohol, fresh and energentic, perfect with roast chicken. Oakridge releases one of the best Pinots I've tasted from Australia with the Willowlake Vineyard bottling. Too much Pinot from this region lacks true varietal character, but Oakridge manages to submit an exceedingly pretty, detailed wine that is light on its feet and compellingly restrained on the palate. Gorgeous red berries are prominent up front and give way to subtle herbs, tea leaves, and minerality on the mid-palate. Balanced but bracing acidity holds everything together with delicacy and grace. Too good to ignore!

A terrific example of topnotch Aussie winemaking expertise inspired by French traditions. New World Pinot Noir in a Burgundian style. The 2014 Oakridge Estate Willowlake VIneyard Pinot Noir Yarra Valley offers crisp, slightly "crunchy" red fruits with notes both floral and spicy. Think Chambolle Musigny. Astonishing quality here at this price. "Bonjour, mate! Merci beaucoup!"

So delicious! Red fruits, vibrant nose, balanced, layered, with some great rustic/forest notes. These Pinot Noirs always seem to display great varietal characters, purity and focus. This single vineyard bottling from legendary David Bicknell in the Yarra Valley, is as good as it gets at this price...enjoy, I sure will!

I love the delicacy of this Pinot Noir. If you are looking for a big "fruit bomb" Pinot...this isn't it. If you are curious about cool climate, elegant, balanced expressions of this majestic varietal...this is a pretty great place to look. Oakridge's wines are pure, restrained faithful expressions of vineyard site. This bottling shows the more feminine side of the varietal; the extraction is light, the fruit pure but not sappy or extracted. The wine expresses lots of the finer, more savory aspects of the grape with an array of fresh picked herbs, smoky spice, volcanic mineral tinges and leaf litter. For years now a bottle of Oakridge Pinot and a roast chicken has been a rite of passage at K&L in Redwood City...this great Willowlake bottling will no doubt continue that honored tradition.
