Inspired by the wines of Domaine Tempier in Bandol, Leighton’s 2013 Gratitude checks in as a Mourvèdre dominated blend that incorporates 25% Grenache and 5% Syrah, all of which was aged in two- to three-year-old puncheons. Cured meats, spice-box, black currants and blackberry nuances all emerge from this sweetly fruited, layered, downright sexy Mourvèdre that has fine, polished tannin and a great finish. Not harvested until the last week of October, drink this rock star 2013 over the coming decade, and I certainly wouldn’t be surprised to see it evolve for longer. While known as the white wine guru behind the releases from K Vintners and Charles Smith, winemaker Brennon Leighton shouldn't be considered a one trick pony and makes incredible reds as well. In addition to having a hand in all of the wines from Smith (whites and reds), he releases a tiny amount of wine under his own label. These are made at the Charles Smith winery and see the same whole cluster and native fermentations, aging in mostly neutral puncheons, and bottling unfined and unfiltered. These latest 2013s are serious, kickass wines that savvy readers need to seek out! (JD)
Broad and generous, brimming with green olive-accented plum and currant flavors, coming together harmoniously on the finish, surrounded with velvety tannins. (HS)
Medium red. Lovely floral lift to the aromas of red cherry and iron. Silky and fine-grained, already conveying lovely inner-mouth aromatic lift to its flavors of red berries, flowers, minerals and rust (from the Mourvèdre?). The wine's sweet, suave tannins will not get in the way of early enjoyment. Delicious. (ST)
