Cabernet Franc is an interesting grape, one that reflects the its local terroir perhaps more than any other red variety. In Friuli, especially Isonzo, where Blason is from, it takes on a different character again. Friulian law doesn’t allow for grapes that aren’t registered in the Region to be listed as ingredients. Even stranger, there are two Cabernet Franc varieties in the area….one is actually Carmenere. Don’t ask, it really doesn’t make sense to a non-Italian, or even me. So Blason’s Cabernet Franc is actually a blend of Cabernet Franc and Carmenere, and it is really sensational. The nose is full of spice, cola, earth accented with bits of chocolate, and there’s a tiny bit of weedy aromatics that add dimension. This is a wine to be drunk at cellar temperature, it adds to the freshness and focuses the flavors, and while only 12.5% alcohol it has real texture and depth. I love drinking this wine with charcuterie or grilled sausage. Try it, you’ll really enjoy it!
