The Côte du Py, one of the best cru vineyard sites in Beaujolais, is on the slope of a 3,000-foot extinct volcano. It produces structured wines that can age well. Stéphane Aviron brought out the quality of Py with a wine that is powerful, ripe and dense with considerable tannic structure. It will certainly need to age, so drink from 2019.
The 2014 Morgon “Côte du Py” Vieilles Vignes from Stéphane Aviron offers up a lovely, complex bouquet that shows just a touch of baked fruit character (in the manner of 1982 Bordeaux) in its classy blend of cherries, red plums, a fine base of granitic soil tones, a touch of fresh herbs, orange peel, dried rose petals and a nice topnote of spices. On the palate the wine is pure, fullish and soil-driven, with a fine core of red fruit, lovely focus and grip, a touch of backend tannin and a long, complex and tangy finish. This is a fine bottle of young Côte du Py, which is approachable today, but will be even better with a few years of bottle age. (Drink between 2016-2035)
Dark ruby. Bright and energetic on the nose and the palate, displaying intense red fruit and floral pastille qualities and a hint of smoky minerality. Sappy and precise, picking up hints of licorice and succulent herbs as the wine opens up. Dusty tannins build slowly on a very long, penetrating finish that emphatically echoes the mineral note.
Floral and peach aromas line the ripe strawberry and cherry flavors in this concentrated, harmonious red. Backed by plenty of spice and juicy acidity, this eases into a lingering, spice- and mineral-infused finish. (GS)
