*Cellar Selection* Few wineries in California can craft a Chard as rich, balanced and ageworthy as this. In its youth this ‘05 is flashy in lemondrop, pear and spicy anise, with a honeyed finish and crisp acidity. It's quite addictively brilliant, a wine whose lush harmony mesmerizes the palate. But Hanzell Chards invariably age well, and this is a wine you can dependably put into your cellar for 5, 10, 15 years, even longer, as it continues to evolve and become more limpid and minerally.
Meaty and round, this is packed with alcohol, which makes the wine feel rich and dense. It has the tannic feel of red-apple skin, along with vanilla and a rustic saddle leather scent. This needs time to come together, then decant it for roast pork.
A ripe, flashy style, showing a burst of pear, apple, melon and citrus, with a dash of hazelnut and spice. Complex and well-proportioned. (JL)
Green-tinged yellow. Peach, melon and brown spices on the nose, with apple and pear emerging with aeration. Showing more lees and spice character than primary fruit in the mid-palate. Finishes strong but a tad alcoholic, with the spicy character dominating. (ST)
