Tasting Notes

As is the case with so many other great spots in Spain, Bodega Casa Juan is located opposite the village church, in the beautiful walled pueblo of Laguardia. The winery is a converted flour mill, featuring concrete tanks for fermenting and blending the wine; and for ageing, barrels that are used for up to seven years. These are traditional Riojas in elaboration and spirit, though the site specificity of their Laguardia and Villabuena vineyards confers a fruit character all its own to these wines. And what fruit! This crianza is a potpouri of mixed berries, with great purity and cut that provides a lovely contrast to the spiciness and oak nuances. Casa Juan's wines are somehow spicy and very drinkable, yet structured and fresh in a way few classic Riojas are. All estate fruit, hand-harvested and carefully vinified with native yeasts, this is a hand-sewn wine with the purity, texture and elegance to prove it. A lovely Crianza for under $15. Bright cherry aromas play with leather and spice. On the palate, there’s a pleasant juiciness and lively quality to the wine. Tannins are well integrated and soft. Red fruit and plum flavors evolve into an earthy finish. Benefits from decanting 30 minutes prior to serving. A fantastic choice as an accompaniment with various paellas

We've been directly importing wines from this fine bodega for several years now, and the Crianza is an excellent example of precisely why. Superb fruit selected, harvested and carefully blended, then given a mandatory year in older oak barrels guarantees a wine of traditional character, elan and charm. Rich aromas of red and blue berries denote a classic, structured palate of balanced fruits, sandalwood, anise and tilled earth, with polished tannins and a lingering, layered finish. A wine that will elicit even more depth with a few years under its belt, er, bottle, but can be enjoyed today with a gentle decant. Lovely.

From one of my favorite Rioja houses comes this lovely, perfectly balanced and distinctively elegant 2013 Crianza Rioja. Deeply colored, the nose abounds with classic red cherry to strawberry to blueberry fruit characteristics that is underscored by spicy anise to truffle-like notes all of which is structured by a touch of cedary oak. Viscous, rich, layered, and well-focused in its complex palate impression, this amazing Rioja Gem has a bright and fresh purity in its presentation from entry to its long, warm finish. Drinking really well now with decanting and airing, Rusty and I plan to put down several cases of this high profiled, perfumed Gem for the next three to ten years. THIS IS A PERFECTLY BALANCED VALUE!!! …..A K&L WINE MERCHANTS’ DIRECT IMPORT….. ***** 13.0% *****
    Drink from 2016 to 2025

This wine delivers, like it always does. Bright red fruit with a little more richness than the previous vintage. Plenty of classic Rioja spice and earth and all for under $15.

So classically Rioja with the bright red cherry fruit, this $13 crianza over-delivers with copious amounts of earth, incense and beautiful baking spices.
