Pale gold. A lively, incisive bouquet evokes citrus and orchard fruits and white flowers, and an iodine nuance emerges as the wine opens up. Shows excellent clarity and depth to the fresh orange, pear and candied ginger flavors, which open up steadily with air. Smoothly combines power and vivacity and finishes very long and taut, with resonating mineral and floral notes. (JR)
Daffodils, lemon rinds and yellow apples rise on the nose of this bottling like a delicate flower petal. The palate is also finely toned, light in style and easy to enjoy, with hints of limestone, sea salt, Meyer lemon and Gravenstein apple.
The 2014 Chardonnay Estate, which is from the Arroyo Grande Valley, is outstanding. Notes of white flowers, white peach and saline-like characteristics all emerge from the medium-bodied, chiseled, clean and beautifully precise Chardonnay. Mostly from the Rincon Vineyard, with smaller portions from Rosemary's and Monet Sereno, aged nine months in 23% new French oak, drink it over the coming 2-4 years. (JD)
*One Star* Sweet oak steps up first in the nose and leads the way with appley fruit slowly joining in, and, while fruit similarly makes a slightly tardy appearance on the palate as well, the wine gains volume and richness after a hesitant start. Its rounded beginnings give way to acidy firmness, and it takes a citrusy turn at the end, yet its uneven delivery is not all that surprising or worrisome given its youth, and another year in the bottle should allow it to find a better fit of its parts.
