K&L Notes

Brothers ("freres") Michel and Robert Perroud who aim to follow in the footsteps of their father at their Beaujolais house. "Together we invested in our roots and bought our first 4 acres of vines in Brouilly. Then we decided to reconstruct a vineyard from a few of our old family plots in Cogny, on clay-limestone, located under the castle of Montmelas. We planted Chardonnay, Viognier, and Pinot noir, on the same lands where our maternal grandfather grew vines and made wine. All our young vines are under organic conversion since 2007 and our old vines are cultivated sustainably. Our grapes are harvested by hand in small baskets of 50 kg, and our methods of vinification are simple and traditional so our land can fully express its flavors and riches!"

This almost equals the concentration of the "Old Vines" bottling but the lines are a little cleaner and there is a lift and freshness that sets it apart. The structure here is more elegant and the violet aromas result in a more graceful expression of Brouilly without sacrificing any richness or depth.

Lovely fresh raspberry, cassis, black plum, strawberry and spice with medium-plus acidity and easy tannin. A pretty expression of Gamay!

Likely one of the most elegant examples of Brouilly that I have yet tasted, the "Amethyste" from Freres Perroud has all the tension and poise of the 2014 vintage, tempered by lovely ripe berry fruit. The tannin structure here could certainly support a few years of aging, but at the same time, the tannins are neither thick nor harsh. The acidity, likewise is fresh, but not astringent, and the overall complexity of the wine is very striking.

“Amethyste” is from Brouilly in the commune of Quincie where there is unique area that amethyst crystal is layered in the soil of the vineyard. The expression here is marked with richness and power. The nose permeates a sweet ripe cherry aroma, and drinks very crisp, clean and fresh on the entry showing a generous, ripe purity of blue and red fruit that the 2015 vintage is shaping up to express so nicely. This drinks happily today, however shows enough structure to hold onto for a few years. Super recommended Turkey Day wine and beyond!

The Amethyste from Perroud comes from a 2 acre vineyard which features 75 year old vines that are planted on granite and sandy soils. This wine sees 12 months of aging in neutral barrels. In the mouth the Amethyste shows a rich, broad texture with plenty of deep red and blue fruits. Similar to the Vieilles Vignes, this wine shows a wonderful purity of fruit and freshness that is a pleasure to drink.
