Tasting Notes

Costières de Nîmes is at the southernmost part of the Rhône Valley sitting on the opposite bank of Chateauneuf du Pape. One of our best new finds is Chateau de l'Ermitage which produces three terrific values with eminent drinkability. The estate's history traces back to the 12th century when the winery produced wine for the pilgrims of Saint Jacques de Compostelle who were traveling the Santiago de Compostela. The property is now owned by Castillon family and today Michel and his son Jerome manage the vineyards and winemaking. The "Victor" is named for the first member of the Castillon family to own the property. The Rouge is a blend of Syrah, Mourvedre and Grenache Noir. The terroir consists of large pebbles from the Durance river which long predates the Rhône. Average age of the vines is 25 years old and the vineyard is about 20.5 hectares. The wine is aged in concrete vats for 6-9 months. This is a terrific barbecue red with plenty of ripe black fruit, peppery spice and pipe tobacco. The winery is certified Terra Vitis (sustainable).

This is a delicious Grenache/Syrah/Mourvedre blend made by a small family winery in Costieres de Nimes, in the heart of the Rhone. Aged in stainless steel, it has pure rich flavors of blueberries and blackberries with graceful nuances of black pepper, herbs, and cola berry. It has plush, round tannins and the perfect amount of acid to lend structure to the juicy profile. That's a great bottle for under $10.

One of my favorite parts of the wine business is finding little-known gems that completely out perform their price-point in every way possible. This is one such wine. It's full-bodied and open, with soft black fruit and an elegance of structure that rounds it out perfectly.

A great ready-to-drink wine for those looking for a medium-to-full-bodied wine that has dark fruit and subtle earth flavors. An absolute bargain, it will go well alone or with hearty foods.

Gravelly soils and a panoply of pebbles describe the lovely lay of the land in this relatively unexplored spot that straddles both the Rhone Valley and the Languedoc regions. Enveloped by a deep robe of purple, this joyous, uber-friendly wine benefits from freshly inviting aromatics and a smooth, mouth-filling palate of blackcurrant, plums, and violets, with touches of tobacco and peppery spice on the round, pleasant finish. With a wealth of generous, festive fruit, this makes the perfect, well-priced holiday red to accompany all your decking and frolicking. Cheers!
