The 2014 Pinot Noir Occidental Ridge Vineyard is one of the most powerful, structured wines in this range. Dark red berry, blueberry, spice, menthol and savory herbs flesh out, while incisive tannins and beams of acidity give the Occidental Ridge its characteristic focus and intensity. Hints of violet, lavender and mint reappear on the vibrant, beautifully delineated finish. The Occidental Ridge is going to need time to come around, but it is compelling, even at this early stage. This is a magnificent showing from Rivers-Marie. (AG) 95+
Here the expressive nose is at once more elegant and more complex with its cool and pure blend of essence of red cherry, pomegranate and spiced tea aromas. The elegance conveyed by the nose carries over to the refined medium-bodied flavors that display fine intensity on the balanced, sappy and beautifully persistent finish. This will need a few years to unwind as it's presently quite tight but the potential is clearly evident. *Outstanding*
The 2014 Pinot Noir Occidental Ridge comes from a vineyard planted with all Dijon clones – 667, 777 and 115. About 10% stems were utilized. This wine, emerging from the famous Goldridge soils of the region, is loaded with pomegranate, black cherry, strawberry, a touch of bay leaf (or is it tobacco leaf), excellent balance, good vibrancy and energy. Drink this easygoing and endearing Pinot Noir over the next 5-7 years. (RP)
