Clean and Pure. A flood of blackberry and mint with subtle tobacco notes over the top. Classic flavour profile with structure, though it remains fluid, even seductive.
John Rymill’s family founded Coonawarra—he’s the great-great-grandson of John Riddoch, who established the district in 1890. Rymill’s father began to experiment with vineyards in 1968 at his horse farm in Penola, at the southern end of Coonawarra, with their current vineyard planted between 1974 and 1982. Those vines produced an elegant, crisp-lined Cabernet in 2013, concentrated in its dark, herbal fruit, formal in its structure. The tight kernel of flavor yields to a pleasurable texture; the wine has presence without any excess weight, structured to develop with age.
Opaque ruby. Red and blue fruits, candied lavender, pipe tobacco and a hint of cedary oak on the perfumed nose. Intense black currant and bitter cherry flavors deepen and spread out slowly with air. Shows impressive depth and supple texture, finishing with smooth tannins and a lingering suggestion of sweet dark fruit. (JR)
Deep garnet in color with a hint of purple, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon has a lovely nose of crushed blackberries, blueberries and plums with hints of cedar, menthol, mocha and spice box. Medium to full bodied with plenty of expressive, youthful black fruit and a gentle suggestion of sautéed herbs in the mouth, it has firm, grainy tannins and a lively backbone carrying the fruit to a long finish. More classic Coonawarra in style than Rymill's 2014 The Yearling (and up a step in price too), this Cab shows all the trademark notes of cherries, cassis, menthol, drying herbs and licorice. It sits firmly in the medium spectrum when it comes to body. And while it's still tightly wound, with sturdy tannins and a chalky texture, there's lots of tangy fruit and stony earthiness that makes it approachable now, yet able to age gracefully for the next seven or eight years.
