Dynamic and well-structured, with expressive crushed stone, blackberry and smoky cracked pepper aromas and layered, powerful flavors that linger. Finishes with velvety tannins. *Highly Recommended* (TF)
More tight and backward, the 2014 Syrah In The Rocks offers notes of incense, red and black fruits, olive tapenade and spice in a rich, full-bodied, yet beautifully elegant package. It needs a few years of bottle age and will keep through 2029. (JD)
Bright ruby-red. Very dark aromas of blackberry, blueberry, crushed stone, licorice and mocha. A substantial but seamless wine with a darker fruit character than the In the Rocks Estate and The Unnamed bottlings. Harmonious acidity nicely cuts the weight of the wine. Suave, pretty, edge-free Syrah with a note of citrus fruit from the inclusion of a bit of co-fermented Marsanne. Like the In the Rocks Estate, this wine was vinified with about 20% whole clusters. Subdued aromas of moist soil, funk, ember and smoke are followed by supersmooth cranberry, cherry and savory flavors, along with abundant earth accents. It brings an appealing sense of texture, although it's quite reserved in style for a Rocks wine. (SS)
