Tasting Notes

The vineyards of Chateau Priban cover less than 1 hectare in the Haut-Medoc. A classic Bordeaux blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and petit verdot. The property is very close to Chateau Cantemerle.

If you are looking for great values in Bordeaux there are certain vintages that offer exceptional quality at entry level prices. 2009 is one such vintage. Nearly perfect weather conditions yielded a large crop of very high quality fruit. The wines are universally lively and fresh with ripe, sweet fruit and fine, silky tannins. The 2009 Priban, Haut-Medoc is typical of the vintage, with perhaps even a bit more ripeness of fruit and richness of texture. A hedonistic pleasure and a great wine to enjoy over the near term.

The Priban has such a wonderfully inviting nose loaded with classic Medoc qualities of blackcurrants, roasted plums, graphite and allspice. Plenty of weight and richness on the palate and a solid finish that belies its humble price point. You could easily pay twice as much for not as impressive a wine.

A very small, boutique producer, with less than 2.5 acres of vineyards, and very hard to find in the USA. The vineyards are located in the Haut-Medoc, close to Margaux appellation. A captivating nose greets you with its sweet cocoa, violets, cassis, a delightful note of capsicum and...roses? On the palate the sweet coffee, and chocolate comes to the the forefront along with cassis, and a touch of spices and earth. It is a generous, pleasing wine, with perfectly ripened tannins and balanced acidity. It is very pleasant to drink right now.

Do not confuse this wine with Pibran from Pichon-Baron. This fine property is near Cantemerle and we loved this wine when we tasted it in April. I love 2009 Bordeaux for their sweetness and fruit-forward style. The fruit overshadows the tannin in 2009 and it surely does here. Lush and lively with red fruit flavors mixed with a touch of oak. A steal!
