The 2014 Vosne Romanée 1er Cru les Beaux Monts has a clean and precise bouquet, tightly wound at first, perhaps aromatics with a leash on it, holding it back for now. The palate is well balanced with grippy red berry fruit laced with bay leaf and a touch of sage. It gently builds towards quite a dense finish that is reminiscent of a Malconsorts. Very fine indeed. *Outstanding* Reduction is present here as well but it's not so strong as to completely mask the spice and gentle wood nuances. In contrast to the funk there is good freshness and vibrancy to the strikingly well-detailed and much more intensely mineral-driven flavors that culminate in a refined, pure and ever-so-slightly austere finale. This is a classic example of Beaux Monts that should amply reward 10 to 12 years of cellaring.
Medium red. Pungent aromas of raspberry, red licorice and crushed stone are less fruity and more soil-driven than those of the Suchots; also cooler today and revealing less on the nose. Penetrating and intense but quite backward, with the raspberry and spice flavors joined by saline minerality on the slightly medicinal back end. Excellent density of material here but this is very young. (ST)
