K&L Notes

Alain Brumont is one of the stars of Madiran. In 1979 he inherited his father's estate, Chateau Bouscasse. With little experience in the wine industry, he quickly educated himself and began transforming the landscape of Madiran. Now one of the largest and most important producers in the region, he has four working properties each distinctive in its own right. Bouscasse represents the most open and polished wine from Alain's holdings. The vines are planted on hillsides with yellow and white clay layered over fissured limestone. Bouscasse is meant to reflect the history of the region, made in the style of the 18th century heyday of Madiran. The wine is a blend of Tannat, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc from vines ranging from 20 to 100 years old. The wine is matured in barrels with 30 to 50% new oak depending on vintage. Full of lush black cherry and blackberry fruit and loads of graphite minerality, you'll feel the awesome power of Madiran and taste the history of the region. Proprietor Alain Brumont has truly revolutionized the region of Madiran so much for the better. Madiran, a region best known for producing wines with jaw-breaking tannic structure, Brumont has perfected the accessibility of the Tannat grape through his strict selection of fruit and winemaking practices. His Chateau Bouscasse property is his original property and it shows all the classic nature of the region with its flavors of melted licorice, menthol, black currants, roasted plums and cocoa husks. It also captures the essential velvety structure of the wines which usually requires years of bottle age to obtain. It doesn't hurt that it is from 2010, so a little head start on age if you will, but the plushness is so inviting, almost like a velvet painting. It draws you in for a closer look and you can't help but touch it. Well, the Bouscasse will draw you in for another taste as each layer unfolds with air, giving way to more character and that beautiful textured feeling . Serve with the heartiest of dishes like lamb or beef braises or a platter of your best charcuterie and pate.

The Bouscasse Madiran uses primarily the Tannat grape, which gives this wine its distinct structure, but this Madiran is made in a more friendly, plush style, making it easier to drink now. Aromas of fennel, mint and blackberry give way to a palate of plums, cocoa nibs and graphite. Up front, the palate is soft and velvety, while on the finish it shows its Tannat structure and tannins making this wine you can drink now or easily cellar for many years to come.
