I tasted this alongside the sample of 2002 Yquem and the Monbazillac certainly wasn’t disgraced in any way. This is an excellent wine, made painstakingly by the Bilancinis, trailblazers of the Monbazillac appellation, the result of many passes through the vineyard in order to pick grapes at the optimum stage of botrytis development. There’s the extra citrus tang that the Muscadelle grape, which does so well here, brings, and the wine doesn’t have the proven track record of centuries that Yquem can boast but no-one should be ashamed of serving this handcrafted wine, which sells for around €30 a half-litre. 17.5/20 points
